My Students

My students are 5 and 6 year olds in a Kindergarten class.

Our school is a large elementary school in an urban area. It is also considered a high poverty area. Many students come from homes where they are being cared for by single parents or grandparents. They come from a place where they do not have many opportunities, but work hard everyday anyway.

My Project

Shared Reading is one of the most important parts of the day in Kindergarten. It is a time when I can bring students into the books that I read. They are able to see the texts and pictures in a whole group setting. They come to Kindergarten unable to read independently, but ready to learn. Using these materials I will be able to share big books with my students. I will also be able to safely store them so that I can use them with many future classes.

This project will allow all students to participate in reading lessons, regardless of ability or confidence level.

Without these items, my students would not be able to actively participate in the books.
