My Students

Winston Churchill once said, "History with its flickering lamp stumbles along the trail of the past, trying to reconstruct its scenes, to revive its echoes, and kindle with pale gleams the passion of former days." For me, a flickering lamp is acceptable--my history classroom needs a blazing torch.

My students are extremely intelligent eighth graders living in an urban setting.

These young adolescents are determined to become successful individuals. Some of their dreams include: being the first family member to graduate from high school, owning their own business, practicing law, becoming an engineer and traveling the world. Unfortunately, our school does not receive much funding; I want to give my students the opportunity to learn through as many resources as I am able to but, because of our current financial situation, this is not possible.

My Project

The resources that I have chosen for my students are unlike their generic textbook. Three comic books focusing on American icons who inspired improvement in our country, and one true account of the American Civil War will grasp the attention of my students--easily. Each of the three books have an extremely specific focus, which present excellent details of the story and further provide broad overviews and individuals perspectives of the event.

The inclusion of different resources into the classroom increases students' focus and interest.

I intend to continue to bring in new and interesting materials but this time I need your help!
