Home Connections: Providing Literacy Resources in the Home

My students need 6 sets of level-appropriate books to read at home, and 5 buddy bags to transport them and containers to help organize them.

My Students

Our current collection of take home books is falling apart. Years and years of little fingers flipping book pages are beginning to take a toll on our book selection.

My 23 students come from a variety of backgrounds.

However, one thing they share is that most of them live in low-income, high poverty areas. They have experienced many difficult and unfair challenges in their little lives, ranging from homelessness to being in abusive homes. They are a very diverse group, with a large percentage of native Spanish speakers.

My Project

The leveled readers will help replace some of our current books that are falling apart due to age. These materials will help my students, many of whom have absolutely no access to books in their home, share their excitement for reading with the adults in their home. Take home books are a huge part of our curriculum and we are excited to be able continue improving this program in our classroom.

We truly need your help to keep our take home book program going strong.

My kindergarten students and I would greatly appreciate your support in helping us to be able to take literature and a love for books and reading into homes where it may not always be present. Every child deserves to be a proud reader everywhere he/she goes, no matter what.
