Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children often plead with their parents for a bedtime story. They love to listen to stories. By listening to what the book should sound like and reading along, they are becoming better readers.

My class consists of 21 first grade students.

My students are mostly second language learners. They are eager to learn and especially want to read. Those who can read are striving to read more advanced books. Our school is K-6 and many of the students are receiving free or reduced lunches.

My Project

In my class, we are using a system called Daily Five. It encourages students to choose 1 of 5 activities to improve their reading and writing skills. The three reading choices are read to self, read to others, or listen to reading. These CD players and read-along books with CDs will give the students the resources they need for the listen to reading option. This activity will provide a model of a good English reader for the second language learners. It will provide the students who are already reading an example of more advanced books. By reading along, the students will be building vocabulary and fluency.

Not only does this project help students improve their reading, but it does it in an enjoyable way.

The children will be able to read books that are just out of their reach. They will continue to grow as they challenge themselves. By having choices the students are also learning to be independent.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
