A Story We Should All Hear

My students need 25 copies of "Susanna of the Alamo: A True Story John Jakes," which provides a different perspective on the events of the Alamo.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The textbooks are boring. They were boring when I was in school and not much has changed. Help be the change at our school by providing additional resources.

I teach social studies and need something to help grab my students’ attention with Texas history.

My favorite way to yank them is to tell them stories they won't find in their textbooks. The suggested book is great to either tell a unique story or see the event from a different perspective. Our school is a Title I school where about 85% of our students are on free and reduced lunches. I can only put so much money of my own into the classroom and would not ask the parents because I know that they are hardworking people that need the money themselves.

My Project

Knowing how much I disliked reading fact after fact in the textbooks, I realized that I could get the same information if someone told it to me in story form. That is what I try to do with my students - make sure that they see how far we have come as a state, and make it meaningful to them. Telling stories that are not widely known can really pull my students in and make it more memorable to the students personally. The books that are listed are ones that tell a unique story that would not normally be found in a textbook or common knowledge. Outside of our textbook and our school library, my students do not have exposure to different types of resources. The books on this list will help enrich the learning that my students receive in my classroom.

By helping purchase these books, you are helping students grasp a better understanding about their state’s history and how they have the power to change the world.

Textbooks are limiting and district funding is not there to supply our library. Students learn in many different ways and these books will provide for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. hide»
