This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I love reporting for the school newspaper. Unfortunately, there is no money in our school budget to provide us with cameras or other equipment that we need. We have to borrow cameras from teachers or take pictures with our cell phones." -a student reporter for our school newspaper

The students who work on our school newspaper (of which I am the faculty advisor) are creative, talented, self-driven and dedicated.

Since the elimination of our Journalism career pathway this year, our newspaper functions as a voluntary afterschool club with a budget of zero. Yet these spirited student reporters have kept the newspaper alive and expanded our news website with original articles, photos and news videos. Our school is a large public high school. It is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse schools in Maryland but grapples with a very high poverty level and other serious challenges that plague many inner-city schools. The school newspaper provides a unique outlet for these underprivileged students to express themselves and utilize their creative talents. Having a semi-professional quality camera that they can call their own will motivate and empower them to share their stories with the world.

My Project

The Canon Rebel T3 is an excellent 12+ megapixel digital camera with a special zoom lens, low-light capabilities and a built-in High Definition video recorder. Currently the school newspaper has no camera at all and student reporters must borrow the personal cameras of their teachers (usually cheap consumer-grade compact cameras) or use their own cameras (which many of them do not own) or cell-phones. Having the Rebel will greatly improve the quality of the photos in our newspaper and website, make reporting more fun and rewarding for our students and hopefully attract new recruits to the school newspaper staff.

This camera will transform our school newspaper by making it more professional, giving students the opportunity to create vivid high-quality images that reflect their point of view.

Ultimately, this camera will become a tool to empower a diverse group of students and give voice to a community that has been silenced by generations of poverty and violence.
