Even Struggling Readers Want to Read the News!

My students need Current Events, Current Health and Scholastic Choices news magazine subscriptions, which are on a wide range of topics that are aimed at students their age.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Just because my students are struggling readers does not mean they don't want to be able to read the news and know what is going on. These weekly readers will give my students the chance to find out what is going on in the world in a way they can understand and get excited about.

I teach Reading to students who have not passed a reading test that determines whether or not they are reading on grade level.

Most of my students try hard every day in class and are determined to become better readers. They know how important it is for them to read every day, and how much their lives can improve as a result of becoming better readers.

My Project

We need need Current Events, Curent Health and Scholastic Choices news magazines on a wide range of topics aimed at students their age. Because my students are young and struggling readers, they are usually not well-informed about the world around them. Even major news events go unnoticed by my students, and I am sure it is because most quality news publications written for an older audience. My students reading news publications aimed at students their age and about topics they are genuinely interested in will not only help them learn more about the world outside their school, but will also help them become better readers and citizens.

Middle schoolers often forget there is a bigger world out there than what goes on in the hallways of their school.

They think friends, family and homework are all is going on in the world, and they don't realize how much more is happening in the world. I want my students to be able to come to my classroom and pick up news magazines they can understand, learn from and enjoy as they become better world citizens.
