My Students

Several of my first graders are unable to read because of the disabilities they are encountering in their lives. The children will be be able to enjoy books independently or with a group of children.

Our school is located in a rural setting.

Many of the children are from economically disadvantaged homes. My mission is to have children read or be read to several times a day. When it is time to read aloud the children stand up and are excited to hear the stories. There have been times when the book is finished and they have became upset because the story is over. The children want to continue to expand their imagination by listening to stories.

My Project

The children will be able to independently pick out stories they want to hear. By listening to a variety of readers the children can hear what great fluency is like. They can become more confident in picking up books on their own. Even if the children are not able to speak, they show their joy for books by their big smiles. For some students they can practice reading along with the audio story.

Even though I read to the whole class every day, I don't have enough time to read to individual students or a small group on a daily basis.

By having a listening center, the children can hear several books throughout the day. For some children they need the challenge of more difficult books and this device will be able to have stories to meet their needs as well.
