Recently, they used base ten blocks and place value disks to build numbers and show different ways to represent them. It is helpful to be able to differentiate learning by some students manipulating numbers within 100 and other going to 1,000. It was exciting to watch them make connections between the hands-on materials, written numbers, and their own problem-solving strategies. These tools have helped make their mathematical thinking visible and have encouraged students to explain their ideas to one another.\r\n\r\nThe students were thrilled when they first saw all of the new materials! They were immediately eager to explore the games and puzzles and could not wait to begin building with the linking cubes and base ten blocks. Their excitement has carried into our lessons, and the materials have helped students feel more comfortable taking risks, trying new strategies, and learning from mistakes.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue strengthening students' number sense and place-value understanding. Students will use the manipulatives to compare numbers, compose and decompose numbers, and develop strategies for addition and subtraction. We will also continue using the games and puzzles to build logic, reasoning, and perseverance.
