Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine a chef cooking without pots or pans? Could a doctor do his/her job without a stethoscope? Can students be successful in school without basic supplies?

I work in a Chicago Public School were approximately 65% of our students are special needs.

Their disabilities range from a mild learning disability to a severe cognitive impairment. Additionally 95% of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Ninety eight percent of our student are considered a minority in terms of their ethnicity. Despite all of these characteristics that put them at risk, my students are energetic, intelligent scholars who will go on to achieve excellence.

My Project

My goal is two fold. First I would like to provide basic school supplies to all my students. Secondly, I would like our special needs students to gain real world experience in a structured setting. My goal is to allow my special education students to realize that they can hold a job in the future--whether it be something simple such as a greeter or even an entrepreneur. They will learn skills from all academic areas including math and language arts. Furthermore they will have a chance to develop social skills.

This project benefits all parties involved.

First we are providing all students with the basic supplies they need in order to be successful in school. Secondly, special ed students have typically been separated from the rest of the school, but the store helps to mix the students in a comfortable way. It boosts the confidence of the special needs students while allowing the general education students to see that people with disabilities are capable of performing many tasks.
