My Students

In today's high-tech world, students struggle to stay engaged in their learning. Can they learn by playing these Learning Well games - Getting the Main Idea, Reading for Detail, Cause and Effect , Context Clues , Fact or Opinion and Inference?

The reading ranges of my 23 fourth grade students vary greatly.

Although I do many whole group mini lessons, I also meet with 6 different groups of 9-10 year old students weekly to focus on their reading ability. We focus on skills that will help them achieve academic growth will working cooperatively. It is my goal to engage them in centers when their group is not working with me. They can continue focusing on the skills of Getting the Main Idea, Reading for Detail, Cause and Effect, Context Clues, Fact or Opinion and Inference while working with others to play each of the games. Not only will they be strengthening their skills but they will be engaged in learning. In today's society, so many games are computerized. I have found that many of my students do not play board games out of school and feel that these games would lead towards team work and collaboration.

My Project

Alpine Adventure has students read story cards and select the correct CAUSE AND EFFECT to move up the mountain. In Pirate Treasure, students have to choose the correct definition for words within the story cards using CONTEXT CLUES. While playing Around the World, students will be choosing the MAIN IDEA to move forward on the game board. MAKING INFERENCES is the targeted skill in School Days where the players move through elementary, middle, and high school as well as college. In Championship Soccer, students practice READING FOR DETAIL by answering question while moving towards the goal. While working with FACTS OR OPINIONS, students have fun being a Smart Shopper in a fun shopping mall.

My number one goal is to get my students to realize that learning can be fun and guide them to be life long learners.

It is my hope that these games will create a fun, learning environment for my 4th graders.
