My students have been so excited to participate in the our classroom economy system. This system allows students to earn classroom dollars for good behavior and lose classroom dollars for unacceptable behavior. This system keeps behaviors in check and helps make students more accountable for their behaviors. Students have been motivated to follow classroom procedures and rules, which has prevented interruptions during our day. This leads to more time spent on learning! The students excitedly await for Friday afternoon when they can trade their classroom dollars for prizes as well as coupons such as special school supplies, stem bin time, show and tell and bring a fluffy friend. The students can also earn fun Friday time as long as they have at least 1 dollar left. \r\nThis project provided prizes for students to spend money on, as well as stem bins and for students to use during fun Friday time.\r\nThis classroom economy project has been a game changer for motivating my students to exhibit positive behaviors in class and to work hard. They were so excited to be able to collaborate and to work out problems right there on the tables with dry erase markers. In addition, the tables have also offered a sense of community, as each table works to earn stars for good behavior, hard work, and being supportive of each other. It definitely is a team effort!\r\n\r\nTruly, our classrooms are the envy of the other 5th grade rooms. Everyone wants tables and the \"comfy chairs,\" as they've come to be known. We have already been using our Scholastic News magazines in our classroom. These magazines provide nonfiction reading material that also supports our science and social studies learning targets. This scholastic news subscription also provide us with high engaging videos and projects that my students enjoy. My students enjoy reading these issues in small groups and like the fact that they can take them home to share with their family.\r\nWe also received 2 science kits that we will be using this spring. One kit will allow the students to plant their plant while learning about plant life cycles.
