My students need 25 copies each of "Reading Makes You Feel Good", "My Visit to the Zoo", and "Animal Babies On The Farm" to start their home library and to encourage them to read at home! Having a print rich environment will inspire them to read more.

My Students

One of my younger sisters recently told me I taught her how to read when she was 4. I remember taking her to the library, buying discarded books for her at the bookstore, and reading them with her. Unfortunately, many of my students simply do not have books at home and can not afford to buy books.

Most, if not all of my Kindergarten students are English Language Learners and receive free or reduced lunch.

I teach at a Title I school in California that has been making significant academic progress because of the students', parents' and teachers' hard work. My students LOVE to learn and they especially enjoy all the books I have read to them and always look forward to the read-aloud. This is an exciting time as they are starting to read!

My Project

My sister is now in her late 20's and she still has the book I taught her how to read with. I would like each and everyone of my students to have that vivid memory of knowing when they learned to read and with a specific book. In order to do that, they need and deserve access to book that extend beyond the classroom. Each of my kindergarten students would benefit from having books of their own at home. This donation of books would help them start their home libraries and hopefully be the start of a rich collection of books at home!

It starts with just one book and you can help by providing that for my Kindergarten students.

Instead of turning on the television or playing a video game, they will be able to pick a book from their home library and read instead. I want my students to be life-long readers and also to read for pleasure. You can help instill that.
