Dancing Flames: Visualizing Sound Waves

My students need a keyboard to use with our Rubens Tube to help them visualize sound waves.

My Students

Have you ever wondered what sound waves "look" like? A Rubens Tube allows my students to really "see" sound waves that otherwise are invisible. We have built a tube and it is ready to go. All we need is a keyboard to generate the pure tones that we will input into our tube.

My students are from Northeast Philadelphia, PA.

Over half are on free or reduced lunches and come from families struggling to make ends meet. Many will be the first in their families to attend college (we hope). We are a Charter School that demands a high level of commitment from them. At the same time, we commit our community to do whatever it takes to help them succeed in school and prepare them for college and life beyond.

My Project

A Rubens tube is simply a long, cylindrical gas burner. When you connect up a propane (gas grill) tank and light it, you see a row of small flames. But when you hook up a musical keyboard, well, that's when the magic happens. You see, each pure tone on a keyboard generates a sound wave with a certain frequency, or waveform. But of course, sound waves are invisible. When you connect the keyboard to the Rubens tube, the flames will instantly take on the shape of the sound wave. If you play a higher pitch (or tone), the frequency increases, and the students can literally "see" the waveform change (the peaks and valleys are closer together). Then if you play a lower tone, they see the waveform stretch out. If you play two or more tones together, they can see how waves can pile on top of each other or cancel each other out in places. (This is called interference). In short, this amazing, yet simple device allows them to "see the sound" and investigate different waveforms.

In Physics, we use Sound waves as a gateway to understanding the nature of waves in general.

Waves and wave energy are one of the foundational understandings in Physics. There are light waves, sound waves, radio waves, water waves, earthquake waves, and so on. The Rubens Tube and keyboard will provide an exciting and memorable introduction to this key content. With it, I hope to literally "ignite" their curiosity and get them wondering: "What else might be out there that I can't see?"
