Could That Happen?? Using Science Fiction To Teach Science.

My students need 42 new intriguing books for a classroom library. These cover various topics, but many of them are science fiction titles, including "A Kiss in Time," "Children of Dune," and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies."

My Students

"I don't read." "I don't like to read." "Reading sucks." My students have said this, and worse. We need books to inspire students to read. Books that show them how fun it can be to relax with a good book!

Our school is in a high crime and high poverty area.

My students deal with gangs and violence every day. Several students are homeless, or transient between several homes. The average reading ability of my students is six years below their age. When presented with reading in class, they struggle, and quickly give up. They do not see value in reading because everything they have been given is too challenging. They have interest. Given the right topic they can get excited about reading.

My Project

These books are high interest books that are at a variety of reading levels. It allows the students a place to start, and room to grow in their reading abilities. The books cover various topics, but many of them are science fiction titles. Using these books in class, and giving them extra time during the day students will be given the chance to read in a calm place, with little distraction. Students who get really excited about their books will present them to the class, and share their excitement.
