My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time a political advertisement made you think twice about your choice in an upcoming election? My students will create and share an advertisement to persuade the classroom audience that their candidate is the best choice for a mock classroom election.

Our school is an urban public high school that has struggled academically.

The school is one of 13 F-rated schools in our district and was labeled a "dropout factory" in a Johns Hopkins Study of retention rates of students from their freshman to senior year. We have a retention rate of just 41%, meaning that only 41 out of every 100 entering freshman will complete all four years of high school and obtain a diploma. As of 2011, only 19% of our students at are reading on grade-level. Having access to projects that use this kind of technology will help to bridge the educational gap for my students and will give them the tools they need to succeed in college.

My Project

I can't wait to see the creative sparks fly in the classroom! My students have many challenges but are eager to express themselves in new and interesting ways. As children of the new millennium they crave technology. The ability to use technology as an alternative way to demonstrate their understanding is the key to successful differentiated instruction. They will learn how the political system works and take ownership of a project that supports a candidate. They will learn the good and the bad in politics and participate directly in persuading their classmates that their choice is the better choice.

This purchase of a camera will impact my classroom and all of my students because this project is just the first of many that will allow students to see the world around them through a new lens and demonstrate their understanding of that world in an interesting and creative way.
