Dissections for Biology!

My students need PIGS - PIGS - PIGS! We need preserved piggies to study anatomy. Students benefit from observing the anatomy of the pigs while they dissect them in class.

My Students

Learning science can be difficult for many students. The challenge we face is that it is very difficult to get kids out into the world to see how science is applied. The relatively high cost of the state of the art materials is prohibitive.

My students are wonderful!

They are bright and energetic. Many of them, however, struggle a bit with science. My school is in California, all students need to take science for graduation. This makes teaching the courses so difficult as it can be the difference between graduating or not. I have wonderful colleagues, and we work tirelessly to find ways to make the curriculum relevant and accessible to our kids, but it is still very hard for the students because we have some very high level standards set forth by our state.

My Project

I am asking for 13 preserved pigs for dissection. These pigs are a by-product of the pork industry. Many students come into class asking "Are we going to dissect anything?". They are obviously very interested and I want to capitalize on that interest by giving them the opportunity to dissect the pig. Anatomically the pig is very similar to a human so students can easily see the similarities and are able to make connections based on those similarities.

It is so important to me to provide the best resources to my students that I can.

This helps them to master the material and prepares them for the college science experience. By working with the pigs the students can start to understand the structures and functions of the human body by actually seeing it. It is critically important for students to have these experiences if they are to excel in science.
