My Students

Going, going, gone...our imagination and the ability to create and role play by using our mind. We know those creative juices are there, we just need to dig deep, find it, and run with it!

My students are from a small rural community in Kansas.

We have a free and reduced lunch rate of over 70% and a very high unemployment rate for Kansas. Our school district has seen deep budget cuts the past few years along with a hiring freeze. Through out these times, I have seen students, parents, and teachers sacrifice what little they have to make a school district function. We are small town with big dreams.

My Project

Technology has come a long way in the way we teach and the way we think. I know it has made our ever changing world very exciting and fast paced, yet I have seen the ability of children to use their imaginations in creative play, falling drastically. I know the imagination of my students would come alive with the the use of a play kitchen, work bench, and couch for our reading area. I have been teaching for over twenty years and purchased the items I have at garage sales or from friends. The years have taken their toll and they become a very undesirable place to experience. I would love to see the smiles on the students faces as we replace broken equipment with areas that come alive with color, updated surroundings, and unexpected excitement. These centers that are created to enhance social skills, which is so desperately needed, will actually be a place children will WANT to be.

This project is important because dramatic play develops speaking skills, social skills, fine motor skills, along with reading, math, and science skills.

It is harder and harder to draw kids away from computers and technology and take time to learn the etiquette of life. I want this project to develop the child as a more rounded child and enhance what they will do and use with technology. Let the games begin!
