My Students

Help make our brains POP! My school is an eclectic group of young adults. Literally making up a melting pot of cultures. Our school has close to forty different languages and dialects of languages spoken. We are a Title I school in a large urban school district, struggling to stay afloat.

Chinese, Japanese, Haitian-Creole, Albanian, Jordanian, Egyptian, Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, Malaysian, Iraqi, Pakistani, and Russian make up a mere snippet of the countries represented in our school.

Many of the students in our school are first generation Americans and the only connection linking the American culture and their own family culture together. Two vastly different cultures connected by one school. Sadly, our school's minimal budget was slashed even further this year, leaving little room for anything extra curricular related.

My Project

Students are only capable of expanding their minds as far as the resources available to them allow. BrainPOP creates animated, curriculum-based content that engages students, supports educators, and bolsters achievement. BrainPOP is used in numerous ways in classrooms, at home, and on mobile devices, from introducing a new lesson or topic to illustrating complex subject matter to reviewing before a test. Content is mapped to Common Core, aligned to academic standards, and easily searchable. Approximately 1,100 students in 46 classrooms in Palm Beach County, Florida and New York City participated in a controlled study of BrainPOP efficacy examining Vocabulary, Language, Reading Comprehension, and Science. Students in classes using BrainPOP made significant improvements compared to students in classes not using BrainPOP. BrainPOP uses animation, voice, characters, diagrams and more to motivate and engage learners in curricular topics.

In today's difficult economic atmosphere I sincerely hope BrainPOP's science-based research study, which included students receiving free and reduced lunch (like my school), will prove to be a helpful resource towards improving achievement.

Funding this project can change the way our children are learning and understanding everything being taught to them. It can directly impact their learning at school and the learning going on at home, with not only themselves but their family members too.
