My Students

Learning to read a second language is difficult and my students need the support of leveled readers to help them with vocabulary as well as decoding the words. The pictures in these books provide them with clues that enables them to understand the words and become better readers.

My students attend a school with over 50% of them receiving free and reduced lunch.

We also have a high percentage of English language learners. Most of my students do not have access to books at home. They also do not have parents who read to them. For a lot of my students, their only opportunity to read is at school, which is why leveled books are so important for them.

My Project

Having the two sets of leveled books libraries in my classroom will give my students opportunities to read more books and to become successful readers. Having more books will give them more choices on what to read and will enable them to advance to higher levels. Hopefully, it will make them life-long readers where they will read to gain knowledge and read for enjoyment.

So many of my students do not have books at home to read.

Their families can't afford books and unfortunately don't take them to the library. The leveled books can be used in the classroom and sent home for students to read to his or her family. Parents have also learned to read by having their child read to them.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
