My Cupboards Are Bare!

My students need exposure to the richness of The Diversity of Life which requires basic lab equipment in our science classroom.

My Students

I went to my cupboards and they were bare. My classroom is a beautiful new science lab, but we do not have the necessary "Lab" equipment. I would love to enrich my Diversity of Life curriculum with the supplies listed.

My school, which spans pre-K through 8th grade, is located in what is considered the most diverse zip code in the United States based on Census data.

This year we will graduate our second class of eighth grade students, so we are only just beginning to develop the middle school experience for students. My students come from a rich variety of backgrounds and bring unique perspectives into our classroom. They are excited to engage in science and eager to learn. This is my first year teaching here, though I have helped to start science fairs at my previous schools and I know we can take on this challenge.

My Project

What is Life? Students will explore protists, plants, and animals in the classroom to determine the structures and functions essential to life. Through the exploration of the characteristics of common organization, students will develop an operational definition of life. Using a microscopes to discover cells students will identify cell structure. With the cell modeling kits they will be able to replicate basic cell parts and learn their functions. We will uncover the basics of genetics and cell replication with the DNA models. This is very important in deepening student understanding of biogenetics. Students need to first discover cell functions and then explore them further with modeling. It helps make the learning more concrete. This equipment will make a huge difference in my classroom

My school is located in the MOST diverse community in the United States according to the US census.

We are highly impacted by poverty. In addition, our city is emerging as the leading biogenetic area in the world. My students need access to that knowledge. With that knowledge they will be better prepared for high school and hopefully a future in STEM. Through engaging equipment and motivating materials, my students will be able to achieve and fulfill their dreams.
