My Students

Have you ever read a true story that inspired you to go out and change the world? My women's studies students are ready to be put to the challenge of opening their eyes to the world through gripping stories of female survival.

My students attend a traditional four-year high school in an economically and racially diverse community.

Quite a high percentage of our school is on free or reduced lunch so asking the students to supply these materials themselves is not really an option. This women's studies class is an honors level social studies elective that I began at this school five years ago. The students are in grades 10-12 and most, if not all, are college bound.

My Project

These young men and women are very interested in gender issues--particularly on a global scale. Learning about another culture and comparing it with our own is a common theme we seem to be coming back to in class, so I really wanted to foster their interests. The books I am requesting are all memoirs of various women, both from the USA and abroad. Their true stories of survival and strength are not only inspirational to the reader personally, they also are very motivational. Whether you are interested in gender issues or not, each book really pushes the reader into action and makes the issues we discuss in class come to life. Once the students see a face behind the issue or statistics, it really makes it real for them.

This project is so important because as we move into a more global society, it is paramount that students have a wider understanding of global issues.

These books will allow my students to expand their horizons while applying critical thinking skills and self-reflection. If my students improve their reading and thinking skills while acquiring a desire to make the world the better place, it is a win-win for everyone!
