My Students

My students enjoy exploring and tapping into their creative side while learning science and social studies. Integrating art across my second grade curriculum enhances EVERY discipline covered while enhancing their academic lessons.

My students are second graders.

They are learning to love reading at school and hands on projects to help them learn the curriculum. I have a very diverse group of students. I teach 2nd grade in a high-need community school. Many of my students come to school without supplies like pencils or backpacks, so I keep a look out for those great sales! Being able for the students to enjoy creating gives these children an opportunity to be excited about science and social studies. They would also be published artists - a real motivation for learning, by posting their work on Artsonia.

My Project

I integrate art into my students daily life in the classroom. When they learn about the life of 2 native American Indians tribes, they draw representations of animals they hunted. With the felt and buttons I am requesting, they will be able to sew the buttons on a felt bear or buffalo they create. When we learn about other cultures, like Africa, they learn about a tribe and their symbols. They will create masks that represent the tribe. In science, when we learn about spiders, the students use the art of the aboriginal people to draw, paint, and show the parts of a spider. In social studies, they learn about our community. They learn about factory workers and making bread. I teach them how to make Celtic knots, and from there they create their own bread inventions! Integrating art for my students, helps them to deepen their understanding of other cultures, geography, and science.By supporting our projects, the students will be able to do hands on projects, not just paper/pencil.

As students share their final projects with the group,it is rewarding to see how much pride they take in completing their pieces.

My students like to post their projects in picture frames around our room. With the power of the arts, students take more interest in what they are learning. They make connections between the lesson and themselves. The application of skills, materials, and processes from one content area to create a product has meaningful application in each another
