My Students

This data that I collect with these HR monitors, will in turn help to promote Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move in Schools initiative and hopefully increase Physical Education time in schools. This will help fight the childhood obesity issue, physical inactivity, and healthy food choices.

Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, they are hard working, eager to find other ways to see how physical activity can enhance learning and academic success.

They need some convincing and see for themselves how they are in control of their life, decisions, and I believe that this can also be achieved by the use of HR monitors. We have a large number of free and reduced lunch students and some very well off families. We have a very diverse population and many different cultures. We are like the NYC of NC.

My Project

I am looking to purchase POLAR HR monitors which I know can produce some incredible data which in turn will show the link between exercise and learning. There is a lot of evidence to support this but not very much data from the state of North Carolina. There is some great data from New York, California, Illinois, and Florida. I plan on collecting data, creating graphs and charts on how sustained aerobic exercise can promote positive behavior, decrease absences, increase mood, self-esteem, better grades, more attentive and alert in class, and much more. When we exercise, certain proteins (specifically BDNF- brain derived neurotrophic factor) and cell are produced in the brain that can enhance learning, memory, attention, and behavior. This is incredible evidence that can not be pushed to the side. We have to show our educators how important physical activity is for successful living for staff, students, and the community.

My mission is to raise awareness of how important physical activity is and how we need to help save future generations for the downward spiral that our nation is heading towards.

I want to start a trend in other schools and other districts to use HR monitors to enhance their PE program and support my mission and to help others understand the link between exercise and academic achievement which will be proved in the data that I collect.
