We Got the Beat!

My students need 6 drums, like the djembes and tubanos, to replace the buckets they have been using for years.

My Students

In a class of 28, how can everyone have a turn playing one drum? How do you keep everyone engaged while the same activity is repeated 28 times, so all students receive the same opportunities? More drums in our music room will allow more students to play at the same time and learn to play together.

My students come from a wide range of homes and lifestyles.

Our school is located in a well-kept middle neighborhood, however we also serve homeless shelters and children's residence centers. We are also home to some of the district's ELL programs and early childhood special education classes. All of my students are very capable, and each does the best that they possibly can. They may have difficulties in their grade-level classrooms, but they love music class and want to play instruments every day. Each and every student looks forward to playing the drum as part of the music curriculum. Our school teaches students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Each student receives 45 minutes of PE, Music, or Library every day and parents and teachers work together to provide after school programs like "School of Rock", Chess Club, Robotics, and Art Club. We have a very dedicated staff of teachers who work diligently to make sure that each student has what they need to succeed.

My Project

These six drums will allow more students to play at the same time. Currently, students are singing and rotating the drum fourteen times for two days so that everyone has a chance to play that one song. With a total of seven drums, we will only need to review the song four times per day and everyone will get a turn! This will allow me much more time to teach many different activities in the same lesson. This variety in topics will help keep the students better engaged over the course of the class period. Learning to play the drums teaches students about rhythm and keeping a steady beat. From kindergarten through sixth grade, students are working on their performance techniques and learning how to play together as a group. While the students are first and foremost learning how to play a song, they are also building a community in which they learn to trust each other and embrace each others' differences. Drumming while singing is also an excellent exercise in hand-eye coordination.

This project is important to our school because these six drums will be available to our nearly six hundred students to learn how to play and use on a daily basis.

All of the students will be able to participate in class by playing the drums, learning how to keep the beat and how to perform in ensembles. Students can take the knowledge they have learned with drums and apply it to band in the upper grade levels or in our after-school program, "School of Rock."
