My Students

My students love to take photos of things around the school and then use those pictures as the basis for stories they write, interviews, and more. Our camera lens broke and now we are stuck with a great camera, that we can't use because we have no lens.

My students are special education children in a school of about 1400 kids.

My kids mostly have disabilities in reading, writing and have difficulty staying on task and focused. Our classes are pull-out replacement english classes. They love to take photos of the kids around them doing various things in the school.

My Project

We really need a replacement lens for our camera so we can get back to the activity that my students enjoy most. They take photos of the kids around them and they use those photos to make stories about them. It gives them great writing practice. We have also written interviews and used the photos to make them more interesting. On top of our social skills practice and writing practice, we often forward the photos to the yearbook club for inclusion in the book. This gives my students additional confidence in themselves.

This activity we do several times during the school year and it has given my students additional confidence in themselves.

They are able to practice their writing and improve their speaking and social skills at the same time. We would really love to be able to do this activity again this year, but we really need a new lens for our camera before that can happen.
