My Students

Students today are not as motivated to pick up a book to read. They are often times more interested in checking out the latest video game. I want to preserve the magic of books and where they can take you, while keeping up with the latest technology.

My school, which is a public school, has a student body comprised of 392 students.

Seventy three percent of the students are white. The remaining twenty seven percent of the student population are comprised of students of Hispanic, African American, Asian, and American Indian decent. Less than twenty percent of the students have Limited English Proficiency. Forty two percent of the student body comes from homes that are economically disadvantaged.

My Project

The students in my second grade class will utilize the Nooks throughout our day. My students may be using their Nook to locate an article in National Geographic Kids Magazine for a report they are writing. They may be reading the latest Magic Tree House book by Mary Pope Osborne. My goal is that my students will make added gains in their reading ability because they are motivated and engaged by having access to the Nooks and what they have to offer.

I want my students, particularly the ones that come from economically disadvantaged homes to experience first-hand in our class that books can come to life before their eyes.

As a part of our literacy class, I will be able to show them all of the features that a Nook has to offer and provide guided practice for their different learning opportunities. My hope is that my students encourage their parents into getting them a Nook, instead of the latest handheld video game player.
