Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I'm the art teacher for three schools that are all within several miles of one another. Two are elementary schools and one is a middle/high school. Clay is always a big hit each year as the kids love to get their hands dirty and create. We've done all kinds of projects over the last few years including functional pottery as well as sculpture and tiles. One year we even made a clay mural. It is always a challenging situation to try and get the students' work fired as we have no kiln at any of my three schools. The art teacher at another school has always offered her kiln for us to use and that has been a real blessing. However, some pieces always break during the transport time in the back of my car. This is to be expected since dry clay should not have to be moved that far to reach the kiln. Now it seem like we do not even have the use of this particular kiln as it is broken and I don't know when or if it will be repaired. I would like to get a kiln to house at one of my schools that would be used to fire work done by my students at all three schools. With a kiln we will be able to keep clay in our curriculum!
