My students need 2 energy resource kits and the Earth-opoly game in order to gain a better understanding of different types of alternative energy sources.
My students live in a community where recycling is not offered as an option. The closest recycling center is about 40 minutes away. My students need to learn the value of conservation as well as alternative uses of energy in order to improve their communities.
My students attend a public charter school serving 700 students in grades 5-12 who live in and around rural northeastern North Carolina.
The middle school started in 2001 and its high school began in 2005. Our student body is 85% African-American with 65% being eligible for free/reduced lunch. In 2002-03 the school was named the sixth highest performing school in the entire state of NC out of 2,219 schools. By 2005 97% of our students were performing at or above grade level according to NC state tests and from 2009-11 100% of seniors were accepted to college-85% of these students will be first generation college graduates. At this school we are guided by the philosophy that "we learn not for school, but for life." We believe education is the most powerful weapon we have to fight for social justice and that our students will make change the world.
My Project
The resources that are requested include a learning kit that will provide information on several alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power energy. Another learning module will provide them with opportunities to look at different forms of pollution. These two kits will be coupled together so that the students will learn their direct impact on the air and water in their community, as well as solutions to prevent waste.
Our school's mission involves students going to college and changing the world.
By providing my students with the opportunity to understand that there are ways to improve their community by becoming responsible for their actions, they will have an opportunity to fulfill this mission.
