My Students

Through a generous grant two years ago, my students were provided with laptop computers for use in the classroom. However, the computers do not have printer access, and while the students can save to the school server, I do not have access to the server outside of school.

I teach at a 6-12 alternative school in North Carolina.

95% of our students receive free/reduced lunch, and the majority do not have access to computers outside of school. For many of them, the ability to use technology in the classroom is the first positive they have associated with school in a long time.

My Project

If each student had his/her own flash drive, it would be much easier for them to save and print the work they do on the computers. Currently students must borrow my flash drive in order to print. They can save work to the school server, but that means I cannot evaluate, proofread, edit or grade their work outside of school. Too often their work "disappears" between when they save it and when I attempt to look at it, or even when they try to go back and continue working on it themselves. With their own flash drives, the students could be sure of where they have saved their work, and also be sure that no other students are accessing their private writing.

The disappointment felt by a student when he/she cannot find their hard work is heartbreaking.

Individual flash drives will give the students both a sense of ownership and an assurance of privacy which will allow them to accomplish their best.
