Do you remember collecting rocks as a child? Students are naturally curious about rocks and I would like to introduce my students to geology with a hands-on science unit on rocks and minerals.
I teach science and math to two classes of highly capable elementary students.
I would like to introduce my students to geology, but unfortunately our school lacks science supplies. My students are eager to learn and I strongly believe middle school is too late to get students excited about science. All students, especially our brightest students, should have the opportunity to learn and excel in science.
My Project
I have purchased a curriculum appropriate and challenging for my students. In addition to every day supplies like paper clips and bricks, my students will need some special items in order to complete the labs. For example, we need safety goggles, so students can protect their eyes while grinding granite rocks together and studying the fragments. They will need beakers and eyedroppers to evaluate which types of rocks are the most water permeable. Students will also need dropper bottles with diluted hydrochloric acid to study and compare chemical weathering with mechanical weathering. These are just three of of the 36 activities in this unit.
Even before budget cuts, science was not a priority in elementary schools.
With your donation, I will have the supplies I need to teach my bright students about geology and give them a solid start in science.
