Help us connect to the outside world! Most of my students have never left our city or state and very few can relate to what is going on around the globe. Without access to regular news, my students do not know how current events impact them, much less what's going on outside their own neighborhoods.
My students are 98% minority status at a large school in Mississippi.
Many have great opportunities to impact their communities and the rest of the state and country, but have seen generational poverty and the failures of the system that was designed to educate them and provide a way out. Our students are bright and have college dreams but are unable to reach them for a number of reasons, mostly because of a lack of perspective.
Having a class set of Weekly Readers will allow for discussion of current events on a weekly basis as well as an additional opportunity for students to practice their reading and analytical skills. My students would be able to gain a better perspective of what is occurring in their state, country and world.
This project will really help our students stay engaged by allowing them to read about current events and discuss them with their classmates each week!
It is so important to educate young minds to consider the world around them, outside of their own neighborhoods and the fulfillment of the project would help us do so. Thank you!!
