Ms. M. from Milwaukee WI is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Ms. M. is requestingMy students need an iPad to aid their communication needs. They also need the iPad smart cover to protect the iPad and keep it safe, a dock to sync it with other electronics in our classroom, and the Apple Care Protection Plan.

Have you ever had difficulty explaining something to someone? What if you could not communicate with your friends and family? Would you want to be singled out and have to carry a 20 pound laptop where ever you went just to order a hamburger? That is one of the many challenges my students face.
I have the honor of teaching students with cognitive disabilities.
I currently teach students in grades 1st through 5th. They are an interesting group who are very interested in Math and Science. They love to do experiments and interact with our Smartboard. All of my current students receive free lunch and many have communication disorders. For many, communicating means lugging around huge devices (some are almost as heavy as them), that only give them 12 options of things to say. They are expensive machines that only one student can use. And because of their size, many students will not use them. Students would rather be silent than embarrassed.
The iPad is an awesome piece of technology. Apple has an app for everything, including communication. With an iPad in our classroom, multiple students would be able to use one device, and they can be taken anywhere. Students would not be embarrassed to be seen carrying an iPad, their voices no longer stifled. The iPad is multipurpose. Students will be able to do word processing and PowerPoints with their classmates. They will be able to go into the regular education classroom and use the iPad to listen to the same stories online that their regular education peers are reading, thus allowing them to participate in whole group discussions. We are also requesting an iPad dock, a smart cover, and the Apple Care Protection Plan.
This iPad would open up the world to a lot of really deserving students.
My students deserve a solid education. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of funds in education. There is no money to purchase these things for students to use. Technology is the future of our world. Teaching students these skills early will only start them in the best direction possible. Won't you help them?
