My students need supplies, like 22 binders, sheet protectors, filler paper, and dividers, to create Fish Folders. The folders will be used to facilitate communication between school and home, and to teach students organization skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine being 5 years old and having to organize homework, behavior reports, corrected papers, and school fliers? That is what my 1st graders have to do! And parents have to find their child's homework and spelling words, when there are 20 papers crumpled at the bottom of their backpack.
My students are in 1st grade at a public elementary school in California.
They are 5 and 6 years old, kind, energetic, and eager to learn to read and write. They are very bright children, but haven't yet learned the skills necessary to organize the mountain of paperwork that comes with being a student! Most of their families are low income, with both parents working 1 or 2 jobs. This means that while parents desperately want their children to succeed in school, most do not have the financial resources to purchase the materials I am requesting.
My Project
FISH (Family Involvement Starts Here) Folders will give students a way to keep organized, and provide families an easy way to be involved in their child's education. Fish Folders are binders which contain folders for homework, corrected work and tests, a behavior log, notebook paper for the parents and I to communicate with each other, and a zipper pouch for students to keep a pencil and crayons to use for their homework. With this donation of supplies to make the Fish Folders, students will learn to organize their materials, a skill which will help students throughout their lives. Families will be able to quickly see what students are learning, find and help students with their homework, see how they are doing on their classwork, and learn what is happening at school. In this way, students will be able to spend their time studying and parents will be able to spend their time helping children with their work, instead of digging around in the backpacks sorting through crumpled papers!
Extensive research has shown that parent involvement leads to student success.
FISH folders are a simple but direct way for parents to be involved in their child's learning. They will also give students an opportunity to develop responsibility, and to learn study and organization skills. Without this donation, I cannot afford to purchase the materials to make the folders! Please help!
