This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Low literacy-levels prevent students from mastering other subjects. Our students need help in improving their reading comprehension!

Our students attend a small public school.

Five years ago, our school opened with only grades six and seven. Every year the school has grown one grade, and this year is its first at full capacity. Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. At our school, we have high expectations that our kids will achieve the skills they need to be college-ready. Traditionally, our neighborhood schools have not had much success sending our students to college. We are trying to change this. This year is the first year that we have a senior class. We will send our kids to college equipped with the literacy skills they need to be successful.

My Project

The ability to read can be the gate-keeper of success in college and beyond. We have a reading program at our school that motivates students to read independently. High-interest books for independent reading can boost vocabulary and comprehension. Our students need this boost to help them meet their more challenging literary needs in content classes. By buying books to stock high school classroom libraries, you can help students develop the literacy skills to help them keep up with the school curriculum. The 20 mystery books, plus the blockbuster Harry Potter series, will give our students high quality and instantly engaging options. The level of the requested books will give our high school students more options and provide a challenge to our middle school students.

Reading is an important skill for both college and career readiness.

We have high expectations for our students but are very limited in the resources we can provide. Any small donation of books can have a huge impact on our students' achievement levels. Please help!
