Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 10th and 11th grade English at a school with a high poverty rate. My school is also "a school in need of academic improvement in New York State." And with the recent proposed budget cuts to educational funding, we are in desperate need of money for supplies and resources.

We are required to read Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" in the 11th grade curriculum.

I teach low level readers and ESL students who need adapted versions of the classics so they can understand. They love opportunities to get up out of their seats, move around, and act. The problem is that we do not have any copies of the screen play version by Horton Foote. I know my students would understand and enjoy this version of the story much better than the novel. With this version, they will have access to the required text at a level that they can appreciate.

My Project

I would like to get new copies of the play for my students to be able to read in class and take home at night. Since the language is difficult and I have lower level readers, they need the time at home to be able to re-read and analyze it. The play version provides them the opportunity to get up, move around and to experience the story in a way the novel version doesn't allow for. These kids need the additional support that the screen play provides. Do you remember what it was like to read boring novels in high school? Sometimes, it was like reading a foreign language! Now, imagine you are a Spanish speaker who is struggling to learn English and you have to read the classics. That is what I am going to ask a lot of my kids to do. I remember hating it in high school because I couldn't understand what was going on.

I first saw the screenplay version when I was teaching in New York City.

When my NYC kids read it, they loved it. They were able to relate the story to other books in the curriculum. And I even had to of my ESL (Spanish speaking students) score a 99% on the ELA Regents when they used this as one of their books on the critical lens essay. I know it is expensive, but please help me to give this opportunity to my current students so they can enjoy this classic novel.
