My Students

I teach sixth grade reading at a high-poverty school. Our students come in with a variety of instructional needs. Some are struggling while others are above grade level, but they are all readers who constantly seek to improve their understanding of the world through reading.

Our students work hard--they're here early and stay late (7:15-4:00).

They go to summer school, Saturday school, call us after school to get help with their homework--anything to meet their goals and compete in our increasingly globalized world. Over two-thirds of my students receive free/reduced lunch. And while many of our students enter below grade level, all of them make exceptional gains through a commitment to education and sheer effort. They're not making excuses, but instead, paving their own road to success! And while California may make major cuts to education and funding, I'm going the extra mile to make sure my amazing and hardworking students have access to the best technology possible.

My Project

I want to make the reading process as engaging and interactive as possible for our students--that means including audio/visual components, tailoring lessons to include illustrations and Cornell notes, and making the reading process come alive using technology. Teaching reading is not easy, but having an LCD projector enables me to expose students to technology, model reading strategies and concepts in a non-intimidating way, and make reading fun through computers! Additionally, many of our students are English Learners, who will benefit from the visualization! It's all about using technology and making the process of reading fun and efficient. No more wasteful worksheets, wet-erase markers, or time wasted on blurry transparency sheets!
