Classroom Poetry Writing Using Classic Poems As Models
My students need multiple copies of the books "Love that Dog" and "Hate that Cat" for reading and for using the poetry in the books as models for poetry writing.
My students love writing poetry! I have found that they need good models of different types of poems as well as something personal to write about. "Love That Dog" and "Hate That Cat" are books by Sharon Creech that we need multiple copies of because they are perfect for achieving both goals.
I teach fifth grade in a public school classroom.
Currently there are 21 students in the class. It is a happy class full of children who enjoy learning and each other. They enjoy being creative and aspire to do their best at school. We enjoy using technology in my class. The children come from a variety of backgrounds and family structures.
My Project
I enjoy teaching poetry writing to my students. I have found that by using classic poems as models that students no longer fear the writing of poems and, in fact, find that it is a wonderful way to engage students in writing. "Love that Dog" and "Hate that Cat" by Sharon Creech are two of my favorite books to read to a class. They are journal accounts of a boy writing back to his teacher in poems after the teacher introduces his class to a variety of great poems. My class enjoys composing poems just like the boy in the story by telling about their own pets.
Students are introduced to poems by Robert Frost, William Carlos Williams, Edgar Allen Poe, T.S. Elliot, Walter Dean Myers, Valerie Worth, William Blake and others in both books. Students find it easy to write poems based on these classic poems just like the character in the book.
We need multiple copies of the books so students can read along with me and also to view the poetry in the book when they create their own poems.
Having multiple copies of these books will make it easier for my students to follow along with the story during class as well as to read them again independently.
It would also make it easier for students to refer to the many poems presented in the books as they create their own pet poetry.
