Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"The art of drawing, which is of more real importance to the human race than that of writing... should be taught to every child just as writing is... " John Ruskin said, and I want my students to learn to see drawing as another language, another way to communicate their ideas and imagination.

I teach an amazing group of students at an urban elementary dual-language public charter school.

My students astound me everyday - learning in two languages, helping to take care of our school and their families, and dedicating themselves to their learning. Our school mission is to integrate the diverse languages and cultures of the communities it serves by teaching all students in two languages and helping children develop an appreciation of other cultures. Children learn to work collaboratively from their multiple experiences and backgrounds, striving towards high standards of academic achievement. Everyone is part of a community of learners, engaging in inquiry about the world, themselves, and others. Our school currently enrolls grades Kindergarten through 5th grade and uses a dual language bilingual education model, in which all students learn 50% of the time in English and 50% of the time in either Spanish or Portuguese, depending of program strand of choice.

My Project

Personal artist sketchbooks would give my 5th grade students a valuable resource to record their ideas as artists and individuals. My students are learning in two languages at our school and I want them to learn to see drawing as another form of communication - another language that they have at their disposal to communicate their ideas to the world. I want them to gain an understanding that their ideas are important and valued. Keeping a sketchbook encourages care and attention to detail and the value of working out our ideas in multiple ways. In keeping a visual sketchbook throughout the year, my students would learn the value of process and working on something over time. They would be able to see their own progress and have a visual record of their experiences. By keeping a sketchbook, my young artists would see themselves in a long history of artists and thinkers who have kept sketchbooks and journals before them.

My students are lucky enough to have an art teacher and art supplies, but a sketchbook of their own, an important place to hold their ideas and imagination would be a wonderful addition to our 5th grade art program.

Sketchbooks would enable students to work out their art ideas throughout the year and keep visual journals of their 5th grade year at our school. Personal sketchbooks would be a source of pride and inspiration and add another level of rigor and excitement to our art classes.
