Life is all around us in many forms. We look at it so much that we fail to notice it any longer, until someone gives us a chance to see things differently, to see things with new eyes. I want my students to see life, and food differently, by taking a closer look at it, literally.
I teach a 4th grade gifted classroom in a public school in Indiana.
My kids are energetic and eager to learn. The more information I give them, the faster they soak it up, but traditional textbooks don't fit these children well. They read all the time. They need to learn more through experience, because that is where real growth takes place.
My Project
I have a curriculum that revolves around making better choices with our food and our lives. In a time of growing rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes, we must empower children to learn more about their food and how these choices change their entire lives. The base of this comes from taking a closer look at food. We can do this by learning to read labels and nutrition facts. We can also literally take a closer look at what we eat by using microscopes in the classroom to see the life that feeds us. There is life in the food we eat and that life gives us energy to help power our own lives. We can learn about our cells, animal cells, and the cells in the food we eat (plant cells) by simple scientific investigations. Yet, these simple investigations provide a longer lasting impact on children.
With the help of Donors Choose and FEED USA, I hope to give kids tools to make their own discoveries about the food they eat and to help set them on a path towards making healthy food choices for life.
