We need Nook books! After years spent building a classroom library to get my young teens reading, I'm ready to admit it: books are on the way out! Recently, my classroom received 2 ColorNooks. We need more Nook books, especially Read to Me picture books for my newest English Language Learners.
My urban middle school students, most of them English Language Learners, begin the year reading years below grade level.
We have a range of readers in our classroom, including new speakers of English who read fluently in another language and fluent speakers of English who read at a beginning level. We work hard together in our multi-grade Language Arts classroom to strengthen literacy skills so that my students can succeed in high school. Daily independent reading is an important feature of our classroom; I am always looking for new ways to get my students excited about books!
My students were beyond excited when the first ColorNooks, donated through DonorsChoose.org, arrived in our classroom. We were able to purchase a small number of picture books for our Nooks, but most of my students have finished reading all these books. It is time to get them some new Nook books so that their reading skills will grow!
My Project
The ColorNook eReader offers a read aloud feature that is particularly valuable for students who are just beginning to read and speak English. Many picture books come with embedded sound which allows my new English speakers to listen to a fluent reader as they master new vocabulary.
For my more advanced readers, the ColorNook has a built-in dictionary. When students encounter an unknown word, they can simply touch the word on the screen to access a definition.
Full-color illustrations and touch screen capability make this little reader ideal for a student to use independently during self-selected reading time.
I am asking for a $250 Barnes and Noble gift card so that I can download more books onto our ColorNook. These books can be shared between 6 Nooks and multiple readers.
I love books; the feel of a book in my hands is part of the reading experience.
For my students, however, reading is more closely connected to gazing at a screen. Books just cannot compete with the built-in cool factor of a ColorNook. Please help keep my students reading and learning with Nook books!
