Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember when reading was exciting? Remember when you went to a Book Fair in school and marveled at the rows of shiny books? Remember what it felt like to grab one off the shelf and feel like you owned a secret? This is the experience I'm trying to deliver to my kids with Literature Circles.
My kids are in ninth and eleventh grade.
They are struggling readers, many of whom have never read a book on their own. They have little choice of what they read in their academic lives. Most school curricula is chosen for them and our school library is all but shut down. On top of this, their economic situation is that they can't afford shopping trips to Barnes and Noble like the rest of us. In short, they have no reason to read and every reason not to. I have seen great gains with the beginning of my Literature Circles last year and they've expanded into this year. I want to continue giving my kids foundational positive reading experiences.
My Project
The resources I've requested are key to the reading experience in and out of my classroom. Literature Circles require engaging, student-chosen books, so I need to have a wide variety of available texts. Essentially I am creating a classroom library of teen books. Through use of these materials my students learn key life skills like inferencing, judgment and evaluation, and analysis. We write about and discuss the books on a weekly basis, as well as make recommendations to others. The Literature Circles program becomes a framework for thinking, speaking, writing, and reading in the English class. We relate these books to curriculum books and make connections. Perhaps most importantly, the experience that these books provide allows kids who otherwise would not have access to quality reads the chance to grow as readers, learners, and world citizens.
This project is important.
Think of how many times in your life something you read impacted your worldview. Now imagine if you never read it. Imagine your world closed off, open only to social media of the present...no voices from other places or from the past. These books will be used year after year and continue to inspire kids to read on their own, to experiment with new types of books, and most importantly to accept reading as an enjoyable and worthwhile pastime.
