Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine that you're 4 years old. You have spoken English with your family for your whole life, and suddenly, your parents drop you off at kindergarten... where everyone speaks another language!
My students attend a magnet school in a city in Connecticut.
We have a very high population of ELL students in my school, and we set a high bar for our students. I may be biased, but I think I have the most eager, wonderful students who love to learn as much as they can. We implemented Reader's and Writer's Workshop this year, and my students are doing so well with their independent reading! My scholars come from various economic and cultural backgrounds, but they pull together to make a wonderful group of learners.
My Project
One of the biggest challenges this year has been the general weakness of my students' oral language skills. During reader's workshop, though the students are spending time in the listening center, I don't feel that they have enough language models. The introduction of the Language Audio Card Reader and various skills/vocabulary cards would allow my students to listen to words and phrases, repeat them, and compare their oral language with a model. This immediate feedback would allow them to correct their speaking and monitor their own language development. This workstation would be an excellent resource for my audio learners, but for visual learners there is reinforcement in the pictures on each card. I would implement this as a workstation during my work period of reader's workshop. I expect that with this addition to my classroom, my students' oral language skills will improve. As an added bonus for my ELL students, there will be an improvement in vocabulary as well.
