Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher of students from an urban school district, I have struggled to create a rigorous curriculum for students to embrace.

However, after much hard work, my students have overcome a tipping point and achieved an almost unprecedented level of AP success for a school that serves a largely underrepresented population.

In 2007-2008, when I began teaching AP Chemistry, only 8% of my students passed the challenging exam. In 2008-2009, 45% passed. Last year, 62% of my students passed in the exam! Of those, 46% received a score of four or higher. This indicates that my students are achieving college level success while still in high school. When students become prepared for college in high school, they are more likely to stay in college and finish successfully because they are more familiar with the associated challenges.

My Project

This year, I envision at least 80% of my students passing. Of these, over half will score a 4 or 5! This can only happen with your assistance. Usually, my district has funds available to purchase review books Unfortunately, they were unavailable to do so this year due to budgetary constraints. My students need AP Chemistry review books prior to the exam on May 2, 2011 so they can all score a 4 or 5!

Many students who come from challenging socio-economic backgrounds have difficulty attaining authentic college preparatory experiences while in high school.

I have been able to provide this kind of education for them by setting high expectations and the support to get there. I am hoping that you may be able to support our efforts so that all of my students may finish their school year successfully in AP Chemistry, and be ready for college.
