Ever wonder why some people can roll their tongue and others cannot. My students ask questions like this everyday, so when we get to our genetics portion of the curriculum I want the students to experience genetic inheritance in a fun hands on way.
My 7th grade students are a great group of kids to work with.
I could not have imagined a better group to start my teaching career. For the most part the students live in rural communities that focus on farming. A large portion of the students' families fall below the poverty line and many more are struggling to meet the challenges of this economy. The middle school in which I teach serves students in the 7th and 8th grade and is considered a title 1 school.
My Project
These resources will provide the students with hands on resources in the area of genetics that they would otherwise not be exposed to. Students will use some of the resources to learn about genetics and the inheritance of various traits. The remaining materials will be used in a project in which the students will get to create a baby blurp using the genetic information from two parents.
Most of the students in my classes have already mentioned that they have no desire to go to college and simply want to work like their moms and dads.
I am trying to inspire these students to realize that through science and education they can become so much more. My goal is for this project to ignite a spark in some of my students to go on to become experts in the field of medicine or genetics.
