I teach adaptive arts to students that are unable to attend regular education classes due to either physical or cognitive disabilities. The visual arts are a place of discovery and learning. The goal of my classes is to engage the students in the creative process and let them know of the much larger art world outside our doors, to enter galleries and know how and why a piece of work was created. We live in an artistic world; my job is to help the students better interpret that.
My students come from a wide variety of racially diversified backgrounds and live in both south and north Atlanta.
Although I might sound biased, we truly have some of the greatest kids around. They are excited to learn new techniques and not afraid to voice their opinions on life. My students take great pride in both their schools and their community.
My Project
I am setting up a opportunity for my students to be able to utilize a wide variety of textures. My students are all special needs with a variety of disabilities. Some are unable to fully enjoy certain art techniques. They respond by feel and touch.
Some of my students only respond to the tactile feel of a object, texture plates give them the ability to do rubbings and feel the material as they do so.
By utilizing different types of textures my students can better grasp traditional concepts and utilize them in their own artwork.
Becoming familiar with materials is fundamental in the fabrication of arts. It is important for students to feel comfortable with these materials.
Budget cuts have all but cut off school funding and our meager remaining funds have left us having to make due with alternate materials. While that is part and parcel with the arts it does make for a lack in truly learning the artistic process.
We are in need of a large variety of different texture plates. A wide variety of plates will enable all of my students to enjoy and participate fully no matter their physical limitations. With such a large student body we go through a lot of materials during the year. I am also in dire need of paper for these plates. Without a proper weight paper they will be unable to use inks and paints with the plates.
The goal of this project is to help the students explore new textures in their artwork.
