My sculpture students are just now learning about structure and space. The difficulty comes when we need materials to further hone those skills. Budget cuts have all but cut off school funding and our meager remaining funds have left us having to make due with alternate materials. While that is part and parcel with the arts it does make for a lack in truly learning the artistic process. By utilizing sculpting foam as the base of their work my students can achieve a higher understanding of sculptural forms. The goal of this project is to help the students begin to learn about subtractive art. They will use the foam as a base for both plaster and concrete and even learn how to decoupage the forms. They will also be able to utilize the cutters in a wide variety of projects, as not only sculpture foam can be cut with them.
