My students need several dissection kits, owl pellets, and safety equipment in order to truly experience biology and be motivated to achieve higher.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How can a student truly experience a biology class without the ability to dissect a frog? It is the memory of the icky, gross dissection during biology that motivates students and helps inspire the future scientist.
I teach in a charter school located in the Los Angeles area.
The majority of my students are socio-economically disadvantaged minorities with the goal to make a difference and attend a college. The larger part of my students will be the first in their families to go to college. Minorities are underrepresented in science degree programs and science professions, so it is important to me to ensure that all my students can get as much exposure to science as possible.
Given the situation my students live in, they are not exposed to any real science at home or in their community. It is up to me to make sure that they are exposed to enough college preparatory, Advanced Placement, and inquiry-based curriculum in order for interest in science, engineering, technology, or math professions to be fostered. Although difficult, I am confident that every year, by experiencing the fun of science through hands-on activities, I will be to make their science experience motivating and enriching.
My Project
The most frequently asked question I have encountered teaching science is, "Are we going to dissect a frog?" It is my students' wish to be able to cut through an actual frog and see, first hand, what is inside. The ability to investigate something that they have seen in their textbooks or the movies motivates students to inquire. By harnessing this motivation, students will achieve higher in AP Biology and college preparatory science classes. Yet, without the safety materials necessary for dissection or the specimens, this window of opportunity - to inspire students to pursue the sciences - will be missed.
By helping me acquire safety materials and dissection specimen for my students to use in the science classroom, my students will achieve higher, become more motivated in science, and be inspired to pursue careers in science, mathematics, technology, and engineering.
