Chapter Books for a New Chapter in Reading

My students need 5 copies of 10 different chapter books.

My Students

Literature circles go round and round only when we have books! Help us get books for reading! We can't have literature circles unless we have books!

I am a second grade teacher at an International Baccalaureate Title I school.

These labels don't define my students. They are amazing caring students who love school! They are bottomless pits of knowledge and strive to learn new things each day! At our school we teach through hands on inquiry based lessons which help all students learn. Using inquiry based lessons allows for our students to be leaders within the classroom. We teach this through group activities in which students become leaders and collaborate with their peers. Literature circles are a way for my students to gain independence while enriching their reading abilities. A literature circle is when a group of students read the same book and each person chooses a job to do while reading that section of the book. When the group meets again the students get to share their findings. Meeting with a group, students hear their peer share their higher level thinking which will encourage others to think deeper.

My Project

A literature circle requires for the students to read the same book but my students have no more books to read. I am asking for 5 copies of 10 different chapter books that are on three different levels. These books are very exciting and engaging for all students. They appeal to boys and girls. The other great part is the levels of the books are identified by the "bite" mark taken out of the top of the book. This way, students feel secure in their reading because the students don't know that is what the bite mark means! My students love to read and these circles let my students become independent readers while also being leaders within the classroom. As a teacher my job is to teach students how to think about what they are reading. The jobs they choose from also allow students to think critically about the story! We are half way through the school year and my students are excited and eager for third grade. Reading chapter books will help them get ready for third grade!

Thank you for considering this grant!

Please think about funding this grant in order for my students to become leaders in reading! Without these books my students will have to stop having literature circles because we don't have anymore sets of books to read! The library only has one or two copies not five! Books are gold in my classroom and I want to continue to provide them with as many amazing stories as possible! Thank you for helping my class become champions of reading!
