Most of the children in our pre-k class are English language learners. They are quickly learning to navigate their home language and their second language of English. The best way for young children to explore a new language is through social play. Hollow blocks would set the stage for talk and play!
Our pre-k program is part of a New York public early childhood elementary school.
The children in my pre-k classroom are predominantly recent immigrants from China. As they enter the year in September, many of the children are being introduced to a new language, environment, and culture. Their ability to adapt, explore, and flourish socially and linguistically is quite remarkable. Hands-on, meaningful exploration is the primary tool we use to open the channels of inquiry, collaboration, and talk.
My Project
I am requesting a 40 piece set of large hollow blocks. These blocks are unique in that they can be used to build life size creations, as each block is 5.5" X 11" X 11". Children will be able to merge block building with dramatic play, as they interact in, on, and around the blocks. They can build a child sized pirate ship, climb inside, add props, and tell a seafaring story.
Hollow blocks will encourage imagination and language use which is what each child in our class needs. They need to feel safe taking risks with their new language of English. Hollow blocks also encourage scientific thinking. Children will use measurement to create stable structures to stand upon. They will explore velocity through building roadways and ramps. They will navigate problem solving as they encounter difficulties in building, they will also work on developing their flexibility and resiliency. The hollow blocks will facilitate development in multiple domains, which makes it a valuable classroom resource.
I can imagine our classroom with a full set of large hollow blocks, and I can imagine the inspiration that would follow.
Children would be inspired to create, talk, and learn together while leaping in, on, and around the hollow blocks. This is the essence of early childhood and would be a true gift to our classroom.
